Fan the flames of Discontent The Dream Tour is changing and it’s starting at a wave pool

what youth dear youth discontent travis ferre

I’ve made it more than apparent that I hate the word content. I hate all of it’s definitions. Content. Content. And content. Fuck ’em all. It’s a bad word. It’s a vanilla plain oatmeal crappy word that encourages status quo and general well being and I’ve never gotten along with it no matter how you’re defining it.

As you read this, something is happening in a small California town called Lemoore that is apparently causing some disruption to the “Dream Tour.” Let’s call it discontent. Which is a word I can very much get behind.

Kelly Slater and his KS Wave Co. are holding a specialty event at the wave pool today, which is interesting because I’m pretty sure the WSL has to be involved otherwise there is a breach of contract because surfers on tour can’t do non-sanctioned events, but I won’t bore us with that. The important thing is apparently the wave has gotten even better. I know about this event because I have friends there (I was not invited, and I’m OK about that), and Stab has decided that it’s the fodder for returning their voice to relevance with their new editor. Which is great. Welcome back.

But all this oddness in Lemoore, CA is a further validation that the surf entertainment world is in a strange way. Within the past week I have sat with some minds I greatly appreciate and just kind of realized how everything is stale and boring — maybe fucked — but for sure in desperate need of something to rally behind. And maybe this discontent is just what we need! Danny Fuller scratched his head in our edit bay asking, “Is this it for the ‘surf industry?'” And then over tacos (and water somehow) with Joe G we discussed similar topics and he appeared  just as baffled on the state of things. But it is not with doom and gloom that the discussion turned, it’s with optimism. The fired up discontent kind that saved our meal and day. There is so much opportunity out there. So many ways to fire this thing back up to make surfing rad again. Because chasing the elites to a wave pool in a weird town where Rob Machado is playing guitar is not my idea of rad. But booking a last minute ticket to the east coast to chase real waves is. Because Mother Nature is still at it, even if the Dream Tour trades salt in for chlorine. We still like the song in our headphones and we’d rather chase swells than wait in line at the pool. Discontent is out there, and we like that. —Travis

Kelly Slater Announces Outerknown And everyone (except us) freaks out because it’s expensive

I love Kelly Slater. Always have. For all the infinite reasons there are to love him: he’s a great rep for surfing, great surfer, great looking, great, great great. He’s a little conservative (maybe) at times — but not really. He’s open-minded, and that’s all I ask. And let’s keep in mind the dude’s 43 —…

Live from a little bit of everywhere Spain, Oregon, Bali, SF, Vancouver and maybe more. We’re coming.

I still haven’t found a way to ask for “more red wine” on an airplane without sounding like a mumbling, lunatic alcoholic. The sounds, the letters, the tight quarters and awkward seating arrangements on board. Just can’t get it. But somehow, they decipher my gibberish and continue to fill my glass. We’re currently a little all…

Jack London Calling Surfing, Books and Drinking for your long weekend in the sun

Jack London is a writer — rather famous one too. He wrote The Call of the Wild, The Sea-Wolf, Iron Heel, White Fang and tons of other famous novels in the early 1900’s that you may have been told to read and probably didn’t. Turns out London wrote about surfing too. In 1907 he was…

Misguided Men with a Journal The defining “SurfCore” article came out. And it sucks.

Before we get too deep, let’s remember anyone using Men’s Journal as a resource for fashion advice, or anything outside of Creatine dosage, probably doesn’t skate our ramp. But, they spoke about surfing. And style. And fashion. So we must acknowledge. (And talk shit.) So let’s begin. Here’s a sentence in the article, next to a…

Editor’s Note: When Nate Lawrence calls and says he’s going to Desert Point with Craig Anderson, I mostly assume that Nate means he will be surfing alongside Craig, because Nate fucking loves surfing Desert Point and he more or less hates shooting Desert Point. But on this trip, he did a bit of both. And…

“It’s still not on!” The WSL learning surfing is still a shit show

While I’m quite certain Samsung Galaxy’s products are not for anyone, the WSL and Samsung may be learning the hard way that surfing is definitely not for everyone. A 9th 10th straight lay day has forced the WSL to extend the waiting period for the Quiksilver Pro until Friday the 13th, in turn costing them a…
