“Where ya been?” A little update on our recent movements

letters from what youth where ya been

Don’t you just love when people ask you that? Well, we do. And people been asking us – especially our mailman, cuz we haven’t been home in a while… so let’s see, where did we go… a little bit of everywhere really. We road tripped up the CA coast in a van thanks to you and the marvel that is Kickstarter. Then we carried that momentum all the way to Samoa (thanks to Waterways Travel and Salani Surf Camp) where we were promptly hit by a cyclone. We weathered that beautifully with beer and readings out of the Bible in our rooms. The cyclone eventually blew over and we got barreled and Gavin Beschen came and basically changed our lives. We threw a rad party with The Jacuzzi Boys in Florida during the very unpretentious and fun Surf Expo show to celebrate Cam Richards new part. Then we zig-zagged to Hawaii to watch Noa Deane surf a comp at Pipe. Now we’re here. A little unsure how to roll it all out. But like we always say and like Albert Camus originally said: “To begin, begin.”

HERE’S A LOOK AT WHAT’S COMING:

Road Trip to SF Thanks to You

We packed Harry Bryant, Colin Moran, Mitch Coleborn and Nate Tyler and eventually Chippa Wilson in and we surfed all over California. Mitch pet a raccoon at 3 a.m. outside our very sketchy motel room. Harry came home in a kimono and face paint and we got some really rare waves pretty damn good.

Cyclone Samoa

Rolled the dice by flying into Samoa during a pretty big cyclone with Gavin Beschen, Colin Moran, and Ford Archbold. Thanks to the guidance of the Waterways and Salani Surf Camp guys though, we pulled it and found plenty of ramps and pits between the Bible readings and beer.

The Other Guys

I personally jumped over to Hawaii to try my hand at webcasting. Did so thanks to the much looser rules of “The Other Guys” show, but I did get to do this magical interview with Mason Ho (see below) while I was there, and cheer Cam Richards into the final and Noa Deane into the Semis. Josh Moniz won the comp and he’s a legend himself. So Hawaii was very much a success. I also played basketball for the first time this decade. Made a basket too.

Issue 20

We kinda missed every deadline associated with it so far, and we won’t bother with the details though because print is dead and it’s a miracle we get to make these things at all and go have parties and hang out with you all. But I will tell you, this one is nearly ready. And when it comes out, we’re coming out: all over, hitting the road and we don’t plan on stopping. Tell the mailman to hold our mail: 2018 is gonna be the most on the run we’ve ever been. You’ll see.

Youth Against the Machine

The Anxiety of On the Road’s Original scroll After reading On the Road (Twice) I feel different

I’ve read Jack Kerouac’s coming-of-age novel On the Road twice now.  First the heavily edited, Penguin Edition and now the racier, much more raw original scroll edition. I’ve also read most of Jack’s other books including Big Sur, The Dharma Bums, Tristessa, Visions of Cody, Mexico City Blues, The Sea is My Brother, and Satori in Paris…

Dear Youth European Photo Diary of Quinn Matthews

Editor’s note: It’s well documented what a national treasure photographer Quinn Matthews is. And while his Europe tour of duty wasn’t without it’s hiccups and we thought we lost him, or he’d lost it, or both, he did manage to come back with some gold. The gallery and story below by Quinn are proof that…

Dear Youth Damp Jeans and the wave of your life

I’ve been in Portugal for about two weeks, and it’s been sunny all of two days. The rest of the time it’s been gale force winds and rain. All of my clothes are wet, cold and dirty from the rain and mud everywhere. I tried to do some laundry the other day, but we don’t…

Dear Youth: Kelly Slater’s 540 sequence Processing Kelly’s air at the Cluster House in France

Kai, Blake and myself went down to Bayonne to pick up some film from a French lab. We had moules and frites on the river (just like Chas suggested) and were enjoying a warm Fall day in France when Mitch Coleborn texted us and said the waves were firing and to hurry the fuck up…

Dear Youth Deep Frence sand and currents with Quinn Matthews

France has been fun. Like, really fun. But like I think I said earlier, it’s a lot colder than last year, and I didn’t pack properly. There’s been a bunch of stuff that’s gone on but I’ll just get right to it and rattle off some observations and experiences in the past week or so….

Dear Youth Scenes from Europe: Part 2

Today I drove past a little Russian gypsy stall and there were a bunch of old cameras on display. I noticed a vintage 35mm Leica, brass plated with a slick wood grain wrap. It had this Nazi emblem etched into the brass. I managed to heckle them down to 120 Euros. It was a relic,…
