Watch Panama Is Certain Starring Taj Burrow and Dion Agius

“I’m free! Best feeling ever! So many trips to come!”

This is what Taj Burrow wrote me when I congratulated him on his plans for retirement from World Tour competition. Taj has been competing on surfing’s World Tour for 18 years. And as we speak, he’s probably doing a Skull Drag in Fiji where he’s celebrating with fellow competitors during the lay days of what will be his final event on the tour. Good for him. And a fine way to send off one of the most influentially important surfers in our history.

With a new daughter and a reinvigorated zest for surfing and living, Taj is hanging up the jersey, but he’s far from done adding to a near perfect career. We actually dubbed him The World’s Greatest Professional Surfer of All-Time for his unending influence and authenticity to an activity/sport/lifestyle that is in serious flux. While Kelly and his wave pool and world titles are there in the mainstream eye, we have our Taj. Forever and always. And while he never won a World Title, his impact on our lives has been arguably greater than any world champ to the core surf fan of this generation. Hardly a debate if you ask me.

We recently got the invite to tag along on a trip to Panama with Taj and good friend Dion Agius — perhaps a glimpse at “retirement” for Taj. What we saw and experienced was nothing different than we’ve always known: world’s best surfer, world’s best dude. Ripping, smiling, laughing and pinching himself at being gifted the opportunity to inspire us all with his surfing and living. It’s all here, you can see it in his perfect railwork, tube riding and nonchalant kickouts. We love Taj and never won’t.

Noa Deane in Californai at Rusty Headquarters What Youth

Noa California A What Youth Original

A lot has changed in a year for Noa Deane. Last summer, his visit to CA would have been a pretty off the radar affair. A few hellos and some shitty surfs in Newport shorebreak. But over the course of 2014, Noa has, umm, kinda been blowing up. With new sponsor deals, loads of hype,…

Riding Bareback The house and home and surfing of Jay Davies

I went on a bit of a rant the other night over chips and salsa regards to how gnarly Jay Davies is at surfing. After watching enough slogging on the WQS webcasts to last me a few lifetimes, I needed to see something to get me psyched and remind me that we still have cowboys…

2013 Memoirs A year in review

Let’s skip the cliche’s: 2013 is done and gone, but we recorded most of it. So here it is, set to what is most definitely our most medieval tune ever (thanks Cukr!). If we could find a way to warn you we would, but we’re already on the run into 2014. Happy New Year to…

Creed in Black and White Let’s go surfing

Creed McTaggart is from Western Australia. But over the course of this year he probably hasn’t spent much time there. But somehow he managed to log this sick clip in between it all. A moody, thrashing little part that we’ve deemed the perfect prescription for today. Let the orchestra play! All in black and white….

Mitch Coleborn synced up with filmmaker Jack Coleman — literally, Jack’s a maker of films, on film, not memory cards, real legit celluloid panels in a mechanical camera.
