Marching Church, the new project of Iceage’s Elias Bender Rønnenfelt, is the kind of bona fide big, brass band we all need in our lives. Imagine Velvet Goldmine spun up in Bowie webs, sprinkled with layers of experimental, somber, indie glam rock, and enough angst to knock you right off your feet. Their new album Telling It Like It Is, released October 26th on Sacred Bones Records, is unlike anything I’ve heard this year. And although the songs sometimes weave in confusing, nonlinear arrangements that play with standard time, the end result is a cohesive collection from a band with tons of promise. So listen up.
“We have here one world united under the sparks of one enormous disco ball hanging over us like the moon. In one fleeting moment in the light of its mirrored surface we see human endurace, in the next we see doom.” —Maya Eslami
