Listen to Navaho Dark and surfy jams from Brussels

It always blows my mind when a band from another country can nail down a California sound. Enter Navaho, a Brussels-based band, who came together over a mutual love of the Growlers and found their own sound along the way. Comprised of Benjamin Saint Viteux (keyboard/vox), Pierre Van Waeyenberge (bass), Quentin Pringels (guitar/vox), Simon Boonen (drums), and Douchan Cantillon (tambourine), Navaho takes cues from super early Growlers’ songs, using reverb-drenched vocals to amplify a woozy, almost carnival surf ride. “We like that mix between, on the one hand, that sunny, surfy sound, full of reverb,” they told me, “and on the other hand, the darker “ghostly” side brought by the lyrics and the chords they play.” Same, dudes, same. And considering the Growlers don’t really sound like this anymore, it’s a nice throw back to that “beach goth” feel.

Navaho has a new album dropping this fall, their first, and as a preview of the fun ahead, we’re premiering four of their songs, plus a great video for their single “Summer”. “We recorded the album live in our rehearsal room, which is an old, abandoned bakery actually. Kinda weird and stinky, but there’s a good vibe in there.” We’re all about good vibes, so soak this up. –Maya Eslami
