Listen to Chastity Belt Cool chicks making good music

what youth recommends Music, Chastity Belt, Girls

Chastity Belt started out as a “joke band” in college, playing house parties for a bunch of drunk bros and slutty girls, but, you know, in Washington, so it was cool. After college, much like every other post grad coming to terms with their squandered education, the ladies of Chastity Belt realized they could make real music for a real audience and actually be a real ass band.

A friend of mine recently turned me on to Chastity Belt, specifically the song “Cool Slut,” off their sophomore album Time To Go Home. Remember that line in Mean Girls where Tina Fey’s telling the mean girls to stop calling each other bitches and sluts and whores? Well, Chastity Belt uses “Cool Sluts” as a sort of slutty girl anthem. Lead singer Julia Shapiro, in her sultry, laid-back voice, declares, “To all the girls in the world trying to take off their shirts, ladies, it’s okay to be slutty.” Amen to that.

Okay, so their videos are a little sloppy, and their songs are more or less about getting fucked up and having sex, but their grooves are on point, and they’re about as real as it gets while maintaining an ironic tongue-in-cheek attitude. The girls of Chastity Belt are having fun and don’t really give a fuck if you think they’re sloppy.—Maya Eslami
