During our recent journey with Jay Davies and Dane Reynolds we nearly ran over a mini horse in the van, but we also got to talking about the state of getting psyched. It’s not as easy as popping in a DVD or VHS these days. Here’s Dane and Jay on what they’ve been doing to stay amped.
Kai: What have you been watching to get psyched lately?
Dane: We watched Jordy Smith and Dion in Modern Collective a bunch, Dusty Payne in Lost Atlas and Andrew Doheny in Tropically Yours. That was pretty psyching…and for sure John John in Done. That’s fucked up.
Jay: Noa in Cheese 2 was sick.
Dane: Yeah I thought that was sick too. What else has been done lately?
Jay: What was the last one you did? Loaded. Loaded was sick. The segment of Noa and then you guys in Hawaii.
Dane: Yeah I always watch Loaded to get psyched [laughs].
Kai: You do?[laughs].
Dane: No!! [laughing]. Except Jay walked in the other day though and I was watching Dear Suburbia and it was a part where it was like my face on the screen and Jay was like, “ahhh, getting pumped eh!.”
Kai: What about a couple throwback sections? From a different era?
Dane: Montaj.
Jay: Sabotaj got me really hyped. And the others that weren’t that amping, but I watched a ton were Jack McCoy films Wide Open and Alley Oop.
Dane: What was it?
Jay: It was a Jack McCoy movie. It was Andy, Taj…Mick Lowe was in there.
Dane: Mick Lowe! Sick.
Jay: That was Alley Oop right? It was old school and I was 12 or something.
Dane: When I first started surfing, Good Times was like the bible. That was pretty much the blueprint of how you wanted to surf.
Jay: Raw Irons was pretty fucking sick too. 5’5” x 19 ¼ too.
Kai: Is it the surfing and music? What is it regards to getting hyped?
Jay: I think the song is the difference.
Dane: This is an extreme example, but Gabriel Medina and Miguel Pupo just put out a section and it used a pretty gnarly song. Like it was too cliche to use in 2001, let alone now. What was the song? Immediately when you hear it, I turned it off. It’s one of the Taylor Steele bands he always used…it was just why would you use that? It’s gotta look fresh. [The song is “Pure Morning by Placebo].
Jay: It’s gotta have it’s own story behind it. Can’t be something that’s been done already.
Kai: It needs a surprise affect.
Jay: It’s just like the surfing is all fresh, so you want to have a fresh vibe to it. Those elements have to come together to make a part.
Kai: Do you go back and watch a movie? Or web clips? Bit of both?
Dane: I watch a lot of web clips…and certain ones I go back to like John John’s. But Rip Curl Board short ads with Gabriel Medina could have the craziest air ever but there’s no way you’re going back to watch that. It’s just the way it’s put together, not because it’s Gabriel or whatever, but because it looks like an ad you’re not getting psyched.
Jay: I find that I watch way more webclips if I wanna get psyched. Even something like Archy on Youtube back in the day.
Dane: I can’t remember the last time I put a DVD in. My computer just doesn’t even have a DVD drive anymore.
Jay: Yeah, I’ve only got a few on my computer.
Dane: I download them when I know I’m going somewhere with no Internet or whatever.
Jay: Days of the disc are dead.
Kai: Next movie is out on VHS only.
