Dane and Kolohe behind What Youth Collected Thoughts 024

Dane Reynolds and Kolohe Andino at What Youth HQ

The day before these two left for France to compete in the Quiksilver Pro they came by What Youth and hung out. Kolohe dropped off some film and Dane was here to work on art direction for Issue Two, and they both ended up staying for the day.

Dane brought all his dogs — Boogie, Truffle and Pam — which made everyone happy. We spent most of the day making not-boring art with glue sticks and glitter because it was so hot outside. Kolohe tagged an entire issue of our magazine by doing dick drawings on most of the pages, plus other assorted bad boy commentary that we’d probably catch shit for if anyone saw it.

Then the ladies who run the wine bar next-door saw Dane skating in the parking lot and asked him to sign some stuff, which he did gladly. We sipped Coors Light with Die Antwoord blasting on repeat through the warehouse. It was not irie. Ever listen to them? Holy shit, they’re incredibly annoying and odd enough to be really rad. We blame Napkin Apocalypse for exposing us to that and the strange anxious joy it induces.

The sun put on quite a performance at dusk and we sat in the parking lot to watch. It was one of those cloudy, humid evenings that make the sky produce hot oranges — so it’s worth enjoying. We remained there on the pavement, drinking beers, talking shit, and dirtying our feet trying barefoot shuv-its until dark.

Dane and Kolohe are both now in France, dropping 10s and come-from-behind wins on the ASP World Tour circuit like champions. Kolohe even texted today and said: “Bad boy crew. Squeaking it and shit. So stoked,” because he beat Taj with less than a minute to go.

If you want that issue Kolohe tagged up, email us at hello@whatyouth.com to explain why you should have it and we’ll send it to you. Just be entertaining. Boring emails always lose.

Update 10/4: The recipient of Kolohe’s graffiti issue was chosen on Friday. She hand-wrote us a great letter, then scanned and emailed it. Score one for the dying arts of handwriting and postal correspondence.

Mikey Wright, Pipeline 2014 Collected Thoughts 096

“In 2014 I only knew Mikey Wright as Owen’s little brother. Even though he was doing stuff like you see in this photo pretty consistently. Now Mikey is his own brand. He’s not Owen’s little brother anymore. The surfing he is doing is unique. It’s fresh. And pretty soon we could be referring to Owen…

Santa Cruz, localism, kooks and me. Collected Thoughts 090

I recently made a mistake. I took a photo at a spot in Santa Cruz and posted it on our WY Instagram account. I didn’t name the spot, but I did say it was a wave that rarely breaks in Santa Cruz. And the photo tells exactly where the wave is. Then came the comments……

Taj just released a rad little video online. It has waves in it that remind me of why I fell in love with Taj’s surfing. I can remember being a teenager and watching Sabotaj on VHS with my buddies. None of us had ever been to Australia. We had never even left Santa Cruz really….

Flash with Nate Tyler in Santa Cruz Collected Thoughts 088

With all the gimmicks and stunts that have gone down this year it makes me think back to the early 2000’s in Santa Cruz. It was the epicenter of smoke and mirror surfing. We’d either go pull into closeout barrels or use jet skis to whip into 2 foot waves with many of the guys…
