Andrew Schoener surfing photography what youth

Shooting film photography is probably the best way to go bankrupt in the current media climate. From processing fees, expensive film and only 24 attempts on each roll, it’s the only thing less efficient than walking across country barefoot. And to shoot film while swimming, well that’s just maniacal. And it’s exactly what our friend Andrew Schoener does. Andrew pays the bills filming with Yadin Nicol, but when he’s not doing that, he swims with Kodak in his water housing.

Now, what you get with this archaic approach are photos with much more character. More grain. More interesting uses of light. And more unique moments. Which is our favorite part of this submission. “I love the process of film, ” Andrew told us. “The color and the mistakes turn the photo into something special.” With so much digital imagery bombarding us it’s nice to see an off-beat moment, shot on film to really appreciate what went into nailing it. John John coiling up pre-launch. Dane’s one in a million fuck you hack. The frozen moment at dawn prior to jumping off the rocks. They all make you want to pour a Radical Class-approved cocktail and ponder the finer things in life and bathe in all that grain.
