Since tending to the neoprene department at the local surf shop I worked at as a kid, a Volcom party has been the pinnacle of after hours culture and folklore around here. Rumors of Pennywise playing…or Bad Religion…or the fact that that hot girl in the other department was attending and this was your shot. This was you. There would be free beer, and Bruce might show. And Barney Barron. And all the dudes you idolized in the videos, and all your friends would be mingling together as one, celebrating the fact that we all did something rad together, and fuck everyone else while we’re at it. A Volcom party was our prom. Our fucking awesome, middle finger to the actual prom. It was way better than the prom. It was surfing. Skating. Snowboarding. Painting. Music. Fashion. It was us. It was you.

Saturday night, March 1st there is a Volcom party scheduled and no amount of rain or flood will be able to stop that. And I can’t help but be excited to cradle a plastic cup and soak in the vibe. True To This features all three disciplines  — surf, skate, snow — that launched Volcom as the first brand to acknowledge all three disciplines and collectively call them a culture. It was 1991. And this will all be featured in one celebratory, 40 minute spectacle of thank God we live like this.

If you haven’t checked out the prequel series for the film, spend some time today watching them all below.

And then, if there is any way for you to pull it off, go to the Volcom party. Get the girl. Have fun. And realize that we’ve got it better than anyone else. —Travis

I still haven’t seen Cluster either And it’s being made in the room next to me

I didn’t think I’d have to write that. But there it is. The morning of the premiere and I still haven’t seen the damn thing. After a week in the desert, followed by an even more dehydrated stint in the lizard den known as the What Youth editing bay, Kai and Blake are still the…

Dear Youth Swimming at Pipe: Quinn Matthews

Editor’s Note: Every time Quinn does something (anything), it’s probably his first time. And while I think he’d swam and shot at Pipe before, these were definitely the biggest waves he’d ever swam in. Which lends for good reading, especially when you line it up with the results you see below. Quinn wrote this and…

Dear Youth 15 photos from North Shore: Quinn Matthews

Last year it was his fresh approach in Hawaii that caught our eye. And throughout the year he’s continued to amaze and baffle us simultaneously with his awe of the world around him and ability to get the wildest shots at the least likely of times. Quinn Matthews is a shy, unassuming, extremely green but…

Kenny Hurtado has always been one of our favorite photographers. Both for the purity of his photography and for his humble demeanor. He’s been over on the North Shore the past few weeks and took a very unique approach to his coverage of the most photographed place in the surf world.
