The Growlers always have tricks up their sleeves. And last Valentine’s Day, during their set at the Observatory in Santa Ana, they surprised the crowd by doing a cover of the Shirelles “Mama Said”, with an amazing segue into the Clash’s “Charlie Don’t Surf”. Talk about a fucking wonderful mashup. Shot by Taylor Bonin and Scott Stinnett, the video is exactly four minutes long, and reveals the usual swagger and flavor the Growlers embody in their live performances. But the songs – really “Charlie Don’t Surf”, one of my favorite Clash songs – take the cake. Hey Growlers, do a cover album already. —Maya Eslami
