On our somewhat hazy Uber ride home from the Brixton 10 year anniversary party last Friday night (thanks boys!), our good friend took control of the stereo and introduced us to Leon Bridges. We were flying down the 5 south when we hit the red glow of brake lights on the 12 lane funnel. Michael (our Uber driver from Compton) made a quick exit, flipped a u-turn, took some sketchy backstreets and we were flying again in no time, windows down, Leon blasting.
If you need to turn your luck around, want to roll the windows down, and fly into revolution summer, Leon Bridges is the call. Throw it on at any backyard BBQ, road trip or hazy Sunday wake-up and you’ll do just fine. His debut album comes out June 23rd and I’m guessing the vinyl is going to be a doozy.
From Leon’s website: It was only last summer that Leon was singing open mics in his hometown Fort Worth, TX. One of those open mics was attended by Austin Jenkins and Josh Block of the notable indie band White Denim who were absolutely floored by Leon’s voice, songs, and creative vision.
They soon after set-up shop in a makeshift studio and recorded the album’s opener “Coming Home” completely live to tape. This first take is exactly what you hear opening the album. The remaining 9 songs followed in a burst of creativity and inspiration.
