Clowns, generally speaking, terrify me. But in Wand’s new video for “Bee Karma,” off new album Plum, a dancing clown in full makeup and costume somehow turns my frown upside down. Directed by Wand’s own Cory Hanson and shot by Abby Banks, the video matches the track’s playfulness, which starts out like a full-blown rock anthem before dipping into Hanson’s gentle vocals, then back again with a vengeance. Almost like a tilt-a-whirl on speed.

“The video stars my brother Casey as the clown that I drive around,” says Hanson. “Abby Banks shot all the footage of him in the car, then I shot all the double exposure dancing parts on a high school assembly stage. It’s an age old story. In the end, the good clown wins and gets to be free. He dances.”

Turns out clowns aren’t always terrifying, especially when they dance. So watch the video and check tour dates below. Plum officially drops September 22nd on Drag City, and Wand will be touring extensively in support. —Maya Eslami
