Listen to Tashaki Miyaki And watch “Girls on TV” directed by James Franco

Video: James Franco

Don’t be fooled by the name of LA-based band Tashaki Miyaki. What may sound like an unearthed Japanese proto band is really the dreamy renderings of singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Paige Stark. Together with guitarist Luke Paquin, the duo’s blend of sedated shoegazey rock ‘n’ roll reminiscent of My Bloody Valentine and Mazzy Star has my insides all excited. Their debut album The Dream drops April 7th on Metropolis Records, and today they’re sharing the video for their lead single, “Girls on TV”, directed by James Franco. Check it out.

The video, starring super babe Juno Temple, is an homage to classics like Midnight Cowboy and Fallen Angels, and, as Franco explains, “about all the dreamers wandering down Hollywood Boulevard.” “We wanted to capture the feeling of being lost while pursuing your Hollywood Dreams.” Pretty perfect for a song about girls on television.

After years of ruminating and finessing their sound, Tashaki Miyaki are ready to slap the world in the face with a delicately arranged bouquet of thorny roses. They’re holding down the Monday night residency at the Echo in March, so don’t miss out on seeing them live. –Maya Eslami
