If you don’t know who Tinariwen is, get ready to have your mind blown. This incredible group of Tuareg musicians from northern Mali combine traditional African percussion instruments with Western electric guitars to create an unparalleled wall of sound. In other words, real African desert blues. Today, the band has announced their highly anticipated new album, Elwan, set to drop February 10th on Anti- records. And sure, that’s a long ass time from now, but Tinariwen knows how to keep our palates whet. Along with the release news, the band has also dropped a video for “Ténéré Tàqqàl,” the first single off the album. Check it out.
Directed by Axel Digoix, the animated, technicolor, psychedelic trip of a video is one of my favorites I’ve seen this year. Set on a desert landscape, with camels carrying amps and flying guitars and some sort of rock explosion that sends sound waves across an ocean of sand, I could watch this video for days. And so should you. –Maya Eslami
