If you don’t know who Night Beats are, get to googling. The Seattle-based, Texas-bred group released their last full length album, Sonic Bloom, almost 2 years ago on the Black Angels’ label Reverb Appreciation Society. Since then, they’ve changed up their roster, signed on to new label Heavenly Recordings and have a new album in tow, Who Sold My Generation, out January 29th. And today, they released their first single, “Sunday Mourning.” Listen up.

Night Beats, named after the Sam Cooke album, are Danny Lee Blackwell, James Traeger, and new bassist Jakob Bowden. Their approach to garage-heavy psyche mixed with R’n’B flavor puts them pretty much in their own category as far as music making goes, and their heavily inspired 13th Floor Elevators vibe is so palpable, it’s no wonder they’ve toured with Roky Erikson and play almost ever Austin Psyche Fest.

“The Elevators were one of the reasons I decided to become a singer and form the group,” says Blackwell. “I loved their attempt to play R’n’B music, but from a distinctly Texan approach. I’d say they have profoundly influenced the group, but it’s now our job to take it to another level in a new age.”

Who Sold My Generation was recorded on old two-inch tape at Nic Jodoin’s house in Echo Park and features guest bassist Robert Levon Been of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. So far, only two shows have been announced, but don’t worry, these dudes don’t stray too far from the sage. They just played Beach Goth in Costa Mesa, and are headed out to San Francisco in November before they leave for their European tour.
