Cass McCombs remains, as ever, an enigma. No one’s ever really sure what he’s up to, or where he’s living, or what he’s recording. He pops up in LA sometimes to play secret shows at Mollusk Surf Shop or to sing with Kurt Vile and Farmer Dave at the Del Monte Speakeasy. He released Big Wheel and Others, his last official album, almost two years ago. And aside from a collaboration tease and tour with Meat Puppets last year, the word on a new Cass drop has been basically moot.
Well, this morning, for immediate release, Domino Records announced a new album by Cass, A Folk Set Apart: Rarities, B-Sides & Space Junk. The album, due out December 11th, will include previously unreleased gems, remastered tracks from older albums, a bevy of guest artists, and a couple collaborations (one with Michael Hurley!). Check ’em out below.
To support the album, Cass also announced a few tour dates for fall.
Wed. Oct. 14 – Los Angeles, CA @ The Fonda Theatre
Thu. Oct. 15 – San Francisco, CA @ Slim’s
Fri. Oct. 16 – San Francisco, CA @ Fillmore
Sat. Oct. 17 – Portland, OR @ Crystal Ballroom
Sun. Oct. 18 – Seattle, WA @ The Showbox
Fri. Nov. 6 – Sun. Nov. 8 – Austin, TX @ Fun Fun Fun Fest @ Auditorium Shores
Fri. Nov. 27 – New York, NY @ Beacon Theatre
And, just because I love this song, watch the video for “Morning Star”, directed by our bud Patrick O’Dell. It’s good to have some Cass to look forward to on a Tuesday. —Maya Eslami
