Indie soft rockers TOPS, the four-piece band out of Montreal that’ll make you think of Julee Cruise, Angelo Badalamenti, and Top Gun all at the same time, combines the perfect balance of love hangovers, teenage angst, and soothing grooves just in time for that summer romance.
In the video for “Outside,” lead singer Jane Penny does a strange Lynchian dance in front of a mirror, almost like she’s trapped in the black lodge with Laura Palmer. Penny lists “Sade, The Pretenders, The Stranglers, and Julee Cruise” as her main influences, and we can tell, and we like it.—Maya Eslami
Their album Picture You Staring was released in April on Arbutus Records.
TOPS are touring the States this fall, catch ’em if you can.
