Prepare to watch the needle shift. No amount of hyperbole can prepare you for this video.
We heard about Yago Dora through Mitch Coleborn — who’s a rather reliable and critical source on the subject of ripping — so we knew to pay close attention. As you’ll see, that isn’t hard to do. Yago represents the the future of technicality, amplitude, variety, tweak, and consistency. Meet him. Watch him. Love him. We do.
WHAT YOUTH: WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
YAGO DORA: I live in Florianopolis, Brazil. It’s a very nice place with a lot of different beaches to surf with some pretty fun waves. The majority of the people who live in Florianopolis come from other cities, so there is a nice mix of cultures. In a couple places the vibe is not good, but at my homebreak the vibe is awesome. We have a lot of skateparks around and when there are no waves everybody goes skating and when the waves are good everybody goes surfing — so everyone knows each other. It’s really cool.

WHO ARE YOUR THREE FAVORITE SURFERS?
Dane Reynolds, John John Florence and Julian Wilson. They are the best for me.They do massive rail turns with good style, they get insane barrels, and they land the sickest airs ever!
WHAT SURF SECTIONS DO YOU LIKE THE BEST?
Dane’s waves in Dear Suburbia were insane, John John’s last section on Done, and Julians section in Indo last year — that’s all I need to get psyched to surf [laughs].

BEST SURF TRIP YOU’VE EVER BEEN ON?
Indonesia in September of last year was the best trip of my life. Me and my friends got the most perfect waves we had ever seen.
FAVORITE WOMAN IN THE WORLD?
My mother [laughs].
DO YOU LIKE DOING YOUR OWN BOARD ART?
I print almost all my boards, it looks a lot better on the footage. I don’t like to use 100 colors, I like to use 2 or 3 colors just to give “life” for the board. I don’t like to print the nose of the board, it makes the nose feel heavy when you see the footage. A couple time ago one friend (@alucinandinho) printed my quiver to Indo and Maldives (See below). I think those were the best art I’ve had on my boards.

WHAT BOARDS ARE YOU PSYCHED ON RIGHT NOW?
I love riding all kind of boards. I have a shaper in Brazil, Arenque board designs, he is really good, for me he is the best in Brazil, and he’s getting better each day, we work a lot with the volume of the board, cause I’m still growing a little bit, so we’ve been changing the volume of my boards to be adequate to my weight. My favorite shapers out of Brazil are Channel Island, Mayhem and Chili.
DO YOU STRESS ON CONTESTS?
I really love the feeling of winning a contest, but I’m not really good competing, but I’m trying to learn more about it, and competing is the best way to learn it.
