What Youth Drinks: The Negroni Orson Welles favorite drink (and ours too)

what youth drinks the negroni radical class

Editor’s note: It’s not a big secret that we like to drink. We travel. Write. Film. Photograph. Surf. Skate. And work hard. And we often balance all that with drink. But we’d like to remind you that drinking isn’t for everyone (hell, it’s not for many), and lots of people have bad drinking styles — just like in surfing — so our mission here is to provide you with some realistic advice for the responsible, non-amateur hour drinker. The Radical Class series will be your guide to life on the road, creative new ideas and some unique food and drinks we’ve discovered through extensive late night research. Today, one of our favorite directors of wine and spirits, Paul Brewer whips us into a colorful day cap: the Negroni. —Travis

Beyond beer and wine and jungle juice, there are cocktails. Good ones. What makes a good cocktail? It’s bitter and sweet and citrusy and strong and yes, sometimes pink. Like the Negroni.

Orson Welles drank Negronis. He said,

“The bitters are excellent for your liver, the gin is bad for you. They balance each other.”

We like balance, especially well balanced drinks.

We’ve never drunk drinks because they have clever names or they’re expensive. We like cheap, easy, and easy. But shoot, man: in the winter it gets dark at 5 and we gotta to fill the time somehow. Compared to a can of beer or a bottle of wine, the Negroni take a little more time to make. Like, at least 2 minutes. They should take even longer to drink. Get to it.

Classic-Negroni

American actor, director, writer and producer (dude got shit done) Orson Welles’ favorite drink: The Negroni.

The official Negroni is from Italy so you’ll probably find official recipes. We’ve seen incarnations of it—booze + vermouth + bitters—all over the world, so be you, figure out what you like, and try different combos. The only way to find a favorite cocktail is to experiment. But experimenting with alcohol—well, that’s the best experimenting there is.

Shake these with ice:

– Two parts gin

– One part sweet vermouth

– One part Campari. The Campari folks keep the recipe a secret, which we enjoy.

(An added bonus: you can drink these all independently of each other. Value.)

Pour in a glass, any real glass you’ve got. Take a lemon peel, squeeze the hell out of it over the drink, and rub the peel all over the rim. Your cocktail will be citrusy, fragrant, a little bitter but really refreshing. It’s also pink, meaning your friends might make fun of you. But fuck, you’re on it: your drink tastes better and is 13 times stronger than PBR. Show them the light. —Paul Brewer

WY Drinks: Herbs in our cocktails Herbs plus booze to raise your cocktail game

When you think of herbs, you generally think of food. And when you think of cocktails, you generally think of booze. That is, the spirit: gin, vodka, tequila, and so on. But combining the two, we don’t see that a lot. I heard of herbs in drinks long ago, but wrote off the idea. (Except…

The WY GUIDE: Cuba Now that the red tape is mostly gone, should you go? Well, we did, here’s what we found.

It’s hard to have a conversation about traveling without someone bringing up Cuba. It’s long been the Holy Grail of American travel because, well, we couldn’t go there. But before heading out on his global kite surfing mission with Richard Branson, President Obama restored diplomatic relations with the Cuban government for the first time in over 50 years. A very…

Radical Class: Layover in Paris A guide to 48 hours in an overwhelming city

A lot of times when we travel, we’ll try to tack on a bonus location. A quick layover somewhere just because it’s the right thing to do. And during a recent trip to Amsterdam we tacked on 48 hours in Paris, just because. We happened to be with Adam Warren who writes the What Youth food…

How To Drink Mezcal in Mexico City “For every ill, mezcal — and for every good as well.”

When you go to Mexico City, don’t order tequila. Or a margarita for that matter. Order mezcal. It’s the drink of choice and will earn you immediate respect from the locals. Mezcal is smokier than tequila, but with similar effects, and it pairs nicely with the spicy food and the flavors Mexico City is known…

The WY Guide: Airports How to expertly navigate the world’s transportation hubs

A necessary evil of being a venerable youth on the run is the time spent in transit. The hopscotch between your destinations. It can be exciting, but mostly it is a pain. WHAT YOUTH DRINKS: BITTERS Throw some stuff in a jar, walk away, and come back to a great cocktail

The makings of a great cocktail: good booze, ice, and not much else. It’s an equation that keeps the Martini going strong.  And it’s the reason why the Old Fashioned is a good thing. The “not much else” is where bitters come into play. Bitters alter the flavor profile of a cocktail in a subtle…
