Curren Caples kickflip in Sweeden Collected Thoughts 072

About 3 years ago I ate sushi with Curren Caples. We had just surfed the pier in Huntington Beach (where Curren somehow dominated the session, stomping backhand air reverses repeatedly). Earlier that day Curren had discovered that he was basically allergic to everything, and especially everything on the menu at this restaurant — but the waitress had a crush on him and she practically re-wrote the menu to help feed the grom. It’s good to be good. And polite. As Curren is.

Cut to a year later and somehow we were all on a plane to Copenhagen with Curren Caples, Arto Saari, Shane O’Neill and Ishod Wair to film The Copenhagen Project. While we were there, Curren took a liking to this park in neighboring Sweden. And as a surfer, his transition game was as stylish, detail oriented and rebellious as a Dane Reynolds “Fuck You” hack. There were similarities. Smooth but reckless. Maybe it’s the Ventura in them.

This photo was taken by Arto Saari of Curren kickflipping this bump.

Tomorrow, in his brand new Fairly Normal, we take a look at where Curren Caples is now and going next. Premiering right here at What Youth.

Dane Reynolds on Public Transportation Collected Thoughts 003

This is Dane on the train to Osaka, in Japan. Osaka is about an hour from its airport and our exit flight left the next day, and as none of us had been to Osaka we decided to ride in and see the sights. The city turns out to be rad, like a smaller Tokyo,…

Craig Anderson between the bars Collected Thoughts 002

Photo by Kai Neville Kai took this photo of Craig a little before 1 a.m. in Brooklyn, New York. They’re leaving the strange party they wandered into after a Dirty Beaches show at Williamsburg’s Glasslands Gallery — truly they did, they sauntered all Australian through some odd open side door and into someone’s loft, where…

John John Florence in Barbados

John John in Barbados Collected Thoughts 001

This is John John Florence by the ghost of an Olympic pool at an abandoned resort in the parish of St. Lucy near the northern tip of Barbados, and what a useless cavity in the ground has he got here. The walls are too vertical to skate, there’s no water to ease the heat, there’s…
