This is a photo of Dion, Dane, Craig and Bez (Beren Hall) watching some clips after a long morning of shredding at a very fun French beachbreak. I sometimes forget how easy photographers have it these days. And by “these days” I mean the motion picture or video era. You see, not too long ago it was a special deal to have a “video guy” on a trip. About half of the trips I went on 10 years ago I was the only person documenting. No web clips. Not even Instagram photos by the surfers! So that meant after the end of each day I had to work on the computer and show the surfers a “slideshow” from the day. They would look at themselves, and then look at themselves again. I was always amazed at how many times they could look at one sequence. On boat trips I would try and sneak off after dinner and hide in my cabin to get out of it some nights. But then Kolohe would knock on my door and say, “slideshow?”
So in France, while filming for Cluster, we had 3 people manning RED cameras. Thanks Kai, Blake and Bez! That means that my 10 frames a second sequence doesn’t beg to be seen by anyone. Hello slo-mo! Au revoir slidesho! —Nate Lawrence
