Craig Anderson Dane Reynolds What Youth

This place, whatyouth.com, is three months old now, but people who’ve been here since the start might remember that this section used to be called Field Candy.

No longer, and here’s why: It turns out Field Candy is already a company. They make camping tents, for sleeping in, that are decorated with artwork. They took issue with the fact that when people Googled “field candy,” they were finding our site instead of a designer tent, and they asked us to stop it.

Fair enough. Collected Thoughts is here now instead.

Collected Thoughts is where we pair a few words with one black-and-white photo from the life and times of What Youth. For example, above you see some film negatives that our photographer Nate shot on a six-week tour through Australia and New Zealand this year. He had about 40 rolls of film in his freezer in Bali that had been there for eight years, and a bunch of old cameras at his other home in California because Bali is too humid for them, and he packed it all.

Photoshop can mimic pretty much every effect Nate captured shooting film for six weeks, and it’s a lot cheaper than developing. But you could stay home and meet girls on eHarmony too, you know? Nate came back with some of the best photography we’ve ever seen using nothing but real natural light. We’re still going through it all.

Anyway, this is Collected Thoughts.

Dane Reynolds on Public Transportation Collected Thoughts 003

This is Dane on the train to Osaka, in Japan. Osaka is about an hour from its airport and our exit flight left the next day, and as none of us had been to Osaka we decided to ride in and see the sights. The city turns out to be rad, like a smaller Tokyo,…

Craig Anderson between the bars Collected Thoughts 002

Photo by Kai Neville Kai took this photo of Craig a little before 1 a.m. in Brooklyn, New York. They’re leaving the strange party they wandered into after a Dirty Beaches show at Williamsburg’s Glasslands Gallery — truly they did, they sauntered all Australian through some odd open side door and into someone’s loft, where…

John John Florence in Barbados

John John in Barbados Collected Thoughts 001

This is John John Florence by the ghost of an Olympic pool at an abandoned resort in the parish of St. Lucy near the northern tip of Barbados, and what a useless cavity in the ground has he got here. The walls are too vertical to skate, there’s no water to ease the heat, there’s…
