Dear Youth Strange Desires: Dane Reynolds from the set of Cluster

I feel like I’m coming down with something. Last time I was here I projectile vomited across the room. A powerful spew that didn’t quite make the bowl. Now there are cats crawling around my gado gado. Sweats aside, the waves are good. Plenty of swell and Dane Reynolds is jamming alongside Jay Davies.

Back on the road, on the move with awesome days ahead. Looking at the maps made it tricky to make a call because you can really go anywhere. Indonesia, as always, was looking the goods, and after some back and forth with Nate Lawrence and Dane, we settled on a random right in Lombok. On paper it was shaping up to be incredible. Dane arrived 30 hours later. Swell hitting the next day, and then…the next day was flat.

Island hopping to a slightly more exposed zone.

We had a 5-hour window with the tide. Mad surf dawg sessions in a dusty, heated little bay, then break for an hour on dead high, eat Beng Bengs under makeshift huts using surfboards stacked on scooters…fuck it’s dry and hot. We have been getting absolutely fried. Nate and I are a little delirious from the sun. Usually we drive around all day though, so getting fried from a 5-hour session is pretty fucking sweet to us.

Nate: “Would you rather jump in a freezer for 30 minutes or sit in this sun all day?”

Dane: “Isn’t that pretty much what you guys just did?”

Yep.

Back on the IndoSat the Australian Network is playing “Home Away” and Dane wants to find out what happens to “Roger.” He’s hooked.

Tomorrow looks good on paper again and Dane is currently watching Jordy and Dion surf the same wave in Modern Collective. The boyz are psyched to bag some for your CLUSTER viewing pleasure.

On a side note Dane recommends watching Strange Desires. He mentioned that Creed looks like he is channeling ’90s Pottz…not intentionally…but there is a resemblance. And I agree. The movie looks sick. Oh, and it’s not the Pottz from the webcast. The rad one.—Kai

Dear Youth The fun that leads to sleep paralysis

“Never trust a thought that didn’t come from walking.” That’s a quote by an old madman by the name of Friedrich Nietzsche. He’s an existential pioneer and had one hell of a dark passenger throughout his life. But the man sure did drop some wisdom while he was here. I bring this up as a bit…

Dear Youth A Treatise on Art and Coffee

Coffee is a drug. That’s masked by ubiquity and social acceptance but it’s just hot speed. Black hot wonderful speed. That thought lingered last Saturday morning as a nice young man in a waxed-cotton apron and mustache — and not a November mustache, but a real annual subscription to the thing — fixed my Guatemalan…
