We told you to listen to Yung a couple months ago, and not only are we taking our own advice, but we’re still basically obsessed with them. Their debut album, A Youthful Dream, has been dominating our eardrums since we first hit that play button. So read our interview with the band below, and keep listening to our new anthem. –Maya Eslami
WHAT YOUTH: We can’t stop listening to A Youthful Dream. Is there a story behind the title?
YUNG: I feel like the title sums up the overall themes on the album. A Youthful Dream can be a lot of things, but for me it’s a reference to the naivety some dreams are made of. No matter what age you are, you’ll always have naïve dreams, so the title doesn’t necessarily relate to the fact that I’m young. A lot of people tend to think that.
Well the album sounds great. And I know, in the past, your albums have mainly been DIY recordings. Was that a hard transition for you, going into a studio with a label backing you?
It was something that I wanted to try, so I didn’t feel like it was a hard transition. We had a bit more money than previously, and we had done recordings ourselves a bunch of times before, so it seemed like a natural step to take.
Which process do you prefer?
There are obviously wonderful things about DIY recordings as well as studio recordings. Prior to going into the studio to record this album, we hadn’t really tried to record in a real studio before. It was definitely different, and I guess that we in someway had to adjust to that, but I think we did, because I’m very happy with the album.
Considering you’ve been a musician almost all your life, if you could be anything else, what would you be?
I would be a pilot or an astronaut. I don’t know if I’d be good at it, but it seems like loads of fun – probably well paid, too. I need the money. I need a job. I’ve been looking a lot on those “how to make 200 bucks a day – follow these four simple steps” ads on the internet lately.
