Hulu released a movie worthy of pirating a password, or signing up for the free 30-day trial. “Dumb: The Story of Big Brother Magazine” tells the journey that Steve Rocco and his band of merry lunatics (many of whom would go on to create Jackass) took the bland and drain-circling skate industry of 1991 (sound familiar?) and turned it on it’s goddamn head by being themselves: punk skateboarders.

Last night, after an intense Hulu password hunt, I opened an ice-cold Stella and began watching. I actually only intended to watch the intro scene to get an idea of the film, but I couldn’t stop. By the end I was five Stellas deep and losing my shit at the audacity these guys had to pull off what they pulled off and couldn’t help but find parallels around today.

They did it with more poop and pee and weiners in those days than we do, but the message is still clear: we have to remember we’re fucking skaters, surfers, misfits, outcasts, not meant for mainstream consumption and every time we forget that, our cultures lose. Big Brother never forgot that.
