On Wednesday night, the Theatre at the Ace Hotel in Downtown LA (remember when we did this there?) is hosting a super special event: a screening of esteemed filmmaker Les Blank’s unreleased-til-now documentary on Leon Russell, A Poem Is A Naked Person. And guess what, Leon Russell will be there, too, in all his glory.
A Poem Is A Naked Person was filmed between 1972 and 1974, arguably at the height of Russell’s career. But the documentary was never released, and only shown privately with Blank’s approval. As told to Billboard Magazine in 2011, Russell said of the doc, “It’s not supposed to be released, but one never knows.”
Well, with the help of Blank’s son Harrod, the film finally found it’s debut at this year’s SXSW. It portrays Russell performing live and in the studio, along with Blank’s trademark “scene” shots: hippie weddings, sunsets, hot chicks, and underground artist Jim Franklin painting an empty swimming pool. Sounds pretty cool to us. –Maya Eslami
