Dear Youth I thought Evan Geiselman was a ghost

Evan Geiselman in France photographed by Quinn Matthews What Youth

This morning I was sitting here editing pages for What Youth Issue 9 (deadlines and shit) when photo rookie Quinn Matthews quit chasing French girls long enough to send us a batch of images from France. I flicked through and who should I see but Evan Geiselman! I immediately picked up the phone and dialed the only Floridian area code I had in my phone.

WHAT YOUTH: I’m sitting here on deadline and I got this little batch of photos from Quinn and I thought I was looking at a fucking ghost. I was like “What! Is that Evan Geiselman?? Where the hell have you been man?

Evan Geiselman: Dude I’ve just been being a redneck in Florida, hanging out.

Fuck, you were all over my life two years ago, flying all over the place, shredding…

Yeah I moved back East a year ago to cruise and surf. I’ll be moving back out there to California in January again though.

So what are you doing in France?

Yeah, Brother called me asking where I was. I had been having a shocker and he was like, “Dude, you have to come and fucking surf. We’re going to France,” and I was like “Ok cool, I’m coming.”

Been surfing?

We’ve just been surfing a bunch. The surf had been kind of smaller so we have had some fun days filming for Brothers movie and been trying to get some clips slowly, but it’s been real fun, we’ve just been hanging out.

When did you move to Florida?

I moved back there two years ago during the US Open kinda. I just got rid of the house in San Clemente and just I got everything back to Florida. And, fuck, just the WQS and just being home and…fuck, thats about it. Fishing, a little bit of hunting. Redneck stuff. You know when you’re in California you see everyone, popping in and out, saying what up to everyone every week. When I’m in Florida you can’t do that as much.

Was it refreshing? Do you feel recharged and psyched?

It is pretty epic and it’s why I’m looking forward to getting back to California in January and getting my roots back out there. But it was epic I’d never been to the house I have in Florida so I’ve been living on my own and there is so many other things you can do that you don’t get to do in California so that’s what I have been enjoying the most.

So you’re all back into country music?

Oh yeah, I’ve got the country music thing too. Everything’s been cool. You forget about it, I was out in California for 4years and I was young so going back I had forgotten about a lot of what it was like in Florida.

Sometimes forget you’re a good old Florida boy. It sounds like your accent is back.

A little bit. It’s not as thick as it used to be, I’ve definitely lost a lot of it.

A slight Hobgood tempo, following right in their footsteps.

That’s good, I’m happy about that [laughs].

Do you feel like you’re surfing good? I mean, like I said, I haven’t seen you surfing in a while so I was fired up to see those photos.

I feel like my surfing has been fine but it’s kind of like I want to make the final really bad when I surf comps, so it’s always in the back of my mind got that going and I think that pressure isn’t working for me. So I think it’s something that I need to enjoy more. Just enjoy the process of it a little bit and not think it’s going to happen over night.

How’s the QS? What’s the story on that lately?

Fuck that thing sucks.

North on 101 in a big white van With Andrew Doheny, Yago Dora, Dillon Perillo and Brendon Gibbens

15 hours in a 15 seater van is a lot of things. It’s super fun, disgusting, hilarious, ridiculous, illegal, terrifying and exactly what we want to be doing. And so we are. We started the day in the beast vehicle at Denny’s on Century Blvd. by LAX. We walked in to pick up Yago Dora,…

The Return to Thrash Have aerials and “clips” reached their ceiling?

I love airs. It’s why I’m here. It’s why I met Kai. It’s been my life’s work to highlight and get people amped on the latest in surfing. And airs have been the thing. Modern Collective was my project when I worked at another magazine and led me on the editorial path I’ve been on…

“Support the freaks as much as jocks.” From a conversation on the surf industry with Dave Rastovich in Europe

Sometimes all it takes is a few minutes with Rasta and all seems right again. From a recent hang in Europe while watching sets roll through at a French beach break: “Tell them how the groms don’t give as much of a fuck about contests as they used to. Heaps of surfers who groms look up…

Beach Goth remains freaky good The Growler’s music festival is the best Halloween party ever

I still have glitter in my hair and I’ve surfed and showered several times since the weekend. But I don’t mind, it’s a nice reminder of a really good time — and I think it’s why I like the Growler’s Beach Goth music festival so much. It’s ridiculous. Absolutely looney tunes. It’s a freak show…

So Long Japan A wild seven days in the streets come to an end and the edit bay opens

We’re literally, somehow, rather deliriously checking in at the airport to leave Japan. 7 days, 3 major cities. DIY spots in the countryside. Robot cafes, underground bars, getting the boot out of numerous epic skate spots. Hotel lobby life, way too much time in a van, copious amounts of time at Lawson, family mart, 7-Eleven,…

I quit eating meat now I have no friends The repercussions of a healthier lifestyle

I didn’t mean to do it. I hadn’t even seen Cowspiracy or Food Inc. yet. Or read the recent study about how processed meat can cause cancer. I just decided I didn’t want to eat anything I wasn’t comfortable killing on my own. So that narrowed my options. I thought nothing should have to die to keep…

Bob Hurley Retires as CEO of Hurley Congratulations on a career dedicated to making our lives radder

Bob Hurley is a surfboard shaper. I know this because I have a surfboard he shaped for me. I also read it somewhere a long time ago, that he was a shaper way before running one of our favorite brands (Billabong), and then starting another (Hurley). But he got his start shaping. And I’ve always loved…

A reason for radio silence What Youth Issue 12 is at the printer

Hi there. I want to begin by apologizing for the silent treatment. Between finishing our 12th issue and inserting ourselves in the sea on the hour, every hour (it’s been absolutely cooking around here), we’ve hardly had a chance to talk. You know, me and you. And that’s because all the planning and prep work in…
