This well-made edit dropped into our inbox this week and we had a look. Filmmaker Freddie Browne follows surfer Eoin McCarthy Deering on an adventure to a remote Atlantic island and tells the tale of how lucky they were to experience this place in all its glory. Eoin probably isn’t going to win a QS heat anytime soon but we don’t think he cares as he grabs a few corners and makes it happen, much the same as most of us do.

With stoke.

What really interested us in the film was the simple yet so valuable component of surfing that includes travel to a far off land and scoring!

We’ll let the boys tell the rest…

“The island is remotely located with its own local weather systems of which are known to be completely unpredictable. Hence the waves and weather that were scored on this trip were a fortuitous gift considering the curtailed time window due to the emerging COVID pandemic.

Unique smells of tropical plants fill the air in this subtropical region with significant humidity that differs greatly from mainland Europe. The volcanic presence is evident with black sand beaches lining the coast plus hot springs and crater lakes allowing for some awesome post-surf activities. The freshest of seafood and amazing hospitality were the real perks of venturing further afield.

As the pandemic began to spread into Europe…the uncertainty of air travel became a reality when we realized that our outbound flight was suddenly canceled. After a tense and uncertain trip, we made it home safely.

We would like to thank the island locals plus all the healthcare staff and essential workers during this worldwide pandemic. Our thoughts are with all those who have been affected by COVID-19.”

Enjoy.
