Afternoon Interview: Saturday’s NYC Episode 036 Fashion, Coffee and Surfing in New York City

Several years ago I found myself in New York for the first time. California surf dude finally standing next to all the landmarks you become so familiar with on TV and movies. Yellow cabs. The Brooklyn Bridge. Central Park. That place they show on Seinfeld during the bass solo etc. The city tripped me out immediately. It was way weirder than any Third World wave garden I’d been too. And to make things even stranger, a few minutes after my first stroll down Broadway I found myself in a surf shop, with Taylor Steele, and we were drinking free beer in a rad plant-lined atrium thing, and there was coffee, and pretty girls in beanies and people talking about surfing and it smelled like neoprene and surf wax. The strange got stranger. I was at Saturdays NYC, a surf shop started in 2009 by Colin Tunstall, Morgan Collett and Josh Rosen.

Since that odd introduction day to the city and the shop, the dudes have opened several more Saturdays across Japan, and plan to open one in Bondi soon. They’ve also launched a beautiful print magazine and become internationally known and featured in mags like GQ and found all sorts of self-made success from their simple love of surfing and the city.

It’s quite well-documented how much we’ve all come to love this crazy town as well, and the turnout we got for our Brother World Premiere in Brooklyn is a testament to that. We can’t get enough. And neither could these guys.
