What a difference a day makes Collected Thoughts 051

Vans us open of surfing what youth scott chenoweth

Today marks one of my favorite days of the year: the end of the Vans US Open. It’s the first sign of many things that I love as a newly transplanted Huntington Beach resident. The crowds will soon dissipate, vacationers will retreat back to their beloved homes, kids will soon again be scribbling waves in notebooks from behind a desk instead of prowling the local lineup (sorry dudes), and most importantly: Fall, my favorite season is rapidly approaching. Today is a picture perfect example of this, the scaffolding is coming down, there is a new swell building and not many people out on the glassy wedges either side of the pier.
Huntington Beach cops get a bad rep from time to time, but when you live here it’s possible to see it’s brighter side more often than the dark that occasionally spills over from the east. Cheers to the combo swell, thinning crowds and a lot more sunshine that will grace Huntington Beach for the next few months. —Scott

Dane Reynolds on Public Transportation Collected Thoughts 003

This is Dane on the train to Osaka, in Japan. Osaka is about an hour from its airport and our exit flight left the next day, and as none of us had been to Osaka we decided to ride in and see the sights. The city turns out to be rad, like a smaller Tokyo,…

They’re leaving the strange party they wandered into after a Dirty Beaches show at Williamsburg’s Glasslands Gallery — truly they did, they sauntered all Australian through some odd open side door and into someone’s loft, where…

John John Florence in Barbados

John John in Barbados Collected Thoughts 001

This is John John Florence by the ghost of an Olympic pool at an abandoned resort in the parish of St. Lucy near the northern tip of Barbados, and what a useless cavity in the ground has he got here. The walls are too vertical to skate, there’s no water to ease the heat, there’s…
