Dice, Morocco 2012. This was a trip when we were filming for Get-N Classic 2, the trip was Dane Gudauskas, Andrew Doheny, Al Knost, Ivan and Nathan Florence. It was my first time there, pretty awesome place, kinda feels like you’re in Baja mixed with some Star Wars vibes. After dark there’s not much to do, so the occasional dice game would break out.
Alex Kopps, San Juanico, B.C.S 2007. I was working at RVCA at the time, and we organized a surf trip with a group of artists. The trip started in San Francisco in a semi-fucked 17 passenger Dodge van. Everything was all good the first half of the drive. Then we had the worst car troubles you could imagine. We had to stay a few nights while we waited for parts to get to the mechanic; shit didn’t work ‘cause they didn’t have the right computer to read the engine. It sucked. We finally said, “Fuck it.”
Christian Fletcher, Costa Mesa, Circa 2005, In the parking lot of the old RVCA building. Christian had been working on his souped-up racing motorcycle for a few days. And this day, while in sandals, got it running. Except the engine was revving super high and crazy. I thought he was gonna fly into the brick wall. But instead, he flew down the street without missing a beat.
This photo was taken on my first assignment from Vans, before officially being hired. Dane Gudauskas on the North Shore, 2009, painting up his Hawaii quiver. Dane is the most stoked person on earth, always down for an adventure or to chase a swell in some exotic land far away.
Dylan Graves “live art,” Virginia Beach, VA, 2010. This was shot during ECSC at the very first Duct Tape Invitational. All the Duct Tape invitees had convened in Joel’s hotel room, I think, and somehow Alex Knost had started to turn Dylan into some kind of sculpture, and then a few others jumped in to add to the masterpiece. It was a hilarious night.
Dane Reynolds, Mainland Mexico 2014. This was on our last filming trip for GET-N CLASSIC VOL.3. Dane and Nate talking about swells and the stuff this caliber of dude talk about. I think this might have been the first time they traveled together on a trip. Wade Goodall also came along to film for the movie. These three personalities really made for an amazing trip, complete with insane waves.
Noosa Heads, Australia, 2013. This photo is from the Duct Tape Invitational event we put on in Noosa. At each of the contests, part of the deal for the competitors is that we supply the accommodation. So the whole time everyone is hanging out, surfing together, and messing around, it really feels like more of a big surf trip than a contest. I think this shot was in Al’s room, almost everyone was jammed in there watching a new surf film and drinking wine.
Nathan Florence, North Point, West OZ, 2013. Nathan Florence lurked out in between sessions in Western Australia. He is one of the funnest people to be around, he always keeps the good vibes up. Nate is also mega-smart, the kid burns through books faster than people can write ‘em. In this photo, Nate still had his tall gangly frame, now he’s filled into his body and his surfing has improved so much. He’s super focused and driven, it’s really awesome to see him killing it.
Robin Kegel, Capistrano Beach, 2012. I can’t say enough about how real-deal Robbie is. He seeks out adventure and the things he wants to do before he even figures out a way to do it. He truly embodies real surf culture, not the paid rockstars or people trying to sell you shit you don’t need. Cat on the street, snake in the water, He’s a total nightmare sometimes, but he’s also a complete genius. One side drives the other.
