i shot this polaroid of my good friend, and roommate at the time chad cheverier. he’d been talking about how awesome it would be to change his phone number to: (949) THE-CHAD. id gotten a new batch of the fuji 4×5 polaroids i hadn’t shot yet, so i wanted to test them out. this is what i got.

i think it was a couple days after that channel st session, that i remembered about this pool id helped some of my friends clean out six or so months prior. i called them, got the go ahead, and we (jake turk and myself) headed over there to check it out. the lady next door is a meth head, and would fill up the pool as much as she could with a hose during the summer, so she could lay around in it. we got there, and sure enough there was so much water, that we needed a pump. we called around trying to find a pump, and couldn’t lock one down. turk manned up and just bought one the next morning. we headed back and got to draining, i think it was around 95º that day.

bane has been one of my favorite hardcore bands for over a decade now. they’re from boston, but they still usually make it out west at least once a year. i shot this photo of front man aaron bedard, at a free show they played in fullerton with cruel hand at programme skateshop, in 2012 and one of the only photos i took that year. the shop was so small, that not everyone who came out could fit in. bane did two sets that evening. the second set was all requests, and it was one of the best shows I’ve ever seen.

this was C st in ventura january 2009. i was shooting a lot of 4×5 during that time, and trying lots of different compositions. i was tired of the typical surf image with something in the foreground, or framing a lineup with a beach tractor or whatever. i wanted the focus to be just on the waves. this batch of illford HP5 was defective (the vertical white splotches) so i got a pack for free.

my girl and i were driving home from dinner one night along PCH in carlsbad, when she randomly requested that i pull over. she pointed at the moon and the reflection on the water and simply said “you need to shoot that”. i got my mamiya RB67 which was loaded with a really high speed batch of b/w polaroids, did some math, and got this shot first try. i think the exposure was 2 or 3 seconds long. this is one of my favorite images i have ever taken.

this was one of the only other photos i took that day- jake reuter with a massive boneless. I’ve had the privilege of being around jake sporadically since he was like 15 or something. he’s always been gifted when it comes to skating, but shooting with him now, compared to then, is absolutely mind blowing. that dude is an absolute beast, who literally progresses daily.

i got this portrait of kassia at her house in oceanside, when we were hanging out a lot. we shared that same passion for old cameras and shooting film. i shot this on one of my last 4X5 type 55 polaroids, the only polaroids that had a negative and a positive. this is the negative. i did a lot of tilt/shift focus in this image so i could solely get her left eye, nose, and lips in focus.

i ordered a liddle in 2010 from KP and when i went to LA to pick it up, KP was sanding the fin. i got this photo basically the second i showed up. that was the best board i have ever ridden, and i miss it daily. i sold it to a roommate in 2011 when i ran out of money due to my drug habits, and needed to make rent.

this was taken on a matix trip i did recently, where i was brought on for video. we had just finished shooting at the cayucos park, and mike anderson was screwing around on the sidewalk and dropping in off the rocks. daewon wanted to get a clip on his iPhone of manderson doing a switch flip with a silhouetted background, so i asked if i could take a photo while he filmed from the same angle. obviously daewons answer was yes.

this image was beyond difficult to capture. its of robin kegel at san onofre in front of his mini school bus. we all went down to surf and bbq, and he showed up wearing this matching outfit. i asked him to stand in front of the back of his van so i could get a portrait. he’d walk into the frame, pose for literally one second, walk out and ask “did you get it?!” not realizing that a 4X5 does not work that way. i think it took 10 or so tries, and a lot of explaining to get him to stand there for a couple minutes, so i could focus, and quickly load the polaroid back and get the image.

this photo was taken a month or two before the channel st session. my friend found a pool near our house in san juan capistrano, but the pool was an L shaped square. it was hardly skateable, and the transition was only about 2 1/2 feet…i think the deep end was 8 1/2 feet. we called turk to come skate it for some project we were working on at the time. this is turk getting over the light on a wall with 6 feet of straight vert.

think I’ve shot with turkey the most since i picked up a camera again, him and jake reuter. we went to channel st a few months back to film some clips for black label, and this was one of the few photos i shot. i was filming jake from that angle, but in the bowl section of the foreground. i really liked the composition of the palm tree cell tower, and that vert wall. i asked turk to do a pivot for a photo i had in mind, and thats what we got.
