Yesterday I’d be lying if I wasn’t a little jazzed driving in for work knowing the Eddie was on. That meant no dead moments today. I’d always be able to flip on the webcast and idle there until something spectacular happened, which at Waimea was sure to be the case right? For some the day of a running webcast means basically doing no work aside from ichatting your homie who works across town — who’s also doing no work — to ask him about that last 7.67 and whether he thought it was higher or lower. These webcasts allow us seemingly unending reason to be in a vegetative state, talking like AM radio announcers about ridiculous nuances. And I’m probably just as guilty as most of you. So this is merely an observation. But one that I also have is that I rarely get excited to surf from a webcast. I get more analytical and lazier. Not sure how I feel about that. There are some great times to be had occasionally when the action is somewhat nonstop (see The Volcom Pipe Pro) and a few fleeting moments through the year on the WSL. But generally, Round 1-3 means 12 hour days with a reason to drink beer and be a sloth. Put it on the big screen, I wanna watch this round 1 clash between ? and ?. Just providing more reason to talk and gossip, less reason to go surf.
So yesterday, when the Eddie didn’t run, I’m sure more than a few of us were a little desperate for something. Anything to fill the void. So instead, I watched this, and within three minutes I was jumping out of my skin to get outside and surf. Thanks Eddie. —Travis
