We lost another classic print publication last week (the regionally great ESM has halted its print edition). We also heard through the grapevine that another magazine in the surf space is on “temporary print hold.” Meaning: magazines are officially gasping for air as our anxiety levels rise with our digital media intake.

And that’s fine. We like to call our magazine a book anyway.

We’re gonna keep doing everything we can to print. Hell, we heard today that one of our bookstore distributors would like to triple their order! How about that! Now, we know this may not last forever, but, for now, we wanna keep making this book and we’ll try every creative scenario and surprise we can to do so. In fact, we’re saying fuck it and giving this new one, What Youth Issue number 19 away for free (for a limited time).

We’ll be offering a 72-hour window (starting Tuesday, November 14) at WhatYouth.com where all you have to do it put your address in and pay the shipping and it’s yours: What Youth Issue 19 for free.

If you’re one of our loyal subscribers (thank you, we love you so much) this one is on the house too, we’re just adding another to your subscription and including some exclusive gifts inside your issue.

Oh, and just to really make sure everyone gets this, we’re gonna head to New York, a place that pumped out waves and inspiration for this issue and celebrate it’s ink on paper at The Flower Shop, our close friends space in the city. We’ll have the mag, drinks and the new Epokhe vid Listen Now, Misty Dawn. More details to come later this week, but if you’re in the NYC area November 15th, come have a drink with us and see the new film from Kai and the boys. Good news on a Tuesday! —Travis

Dear Youth A Treatise on Art and Coffee

Coffee is a drug. That’s masked by ubiquity and social acceptance but it’s just hot speed. Black hot wonderful speed. That thought lingered last Saturday morning as a nice young man in a waxed-cotton apron and mustache — and not a November mustache, but a real annual subscription to the thing — fixed my Guatemalan…
