Found Footage: Stranger than Paradise YouTube Gold from the man who gave us Coffee and Cigarettes

Video: Jim Jarmusch

A few good things fell into place and I fell onto my couch and subsequently fell back in love with Jim Jarmusch. Jarmusch has earned his place as a legendary cult film director by making movies such as Dead Man, Down By Law and Coffee and Cigarettes.

The three films mentioned above inspire me every time I see them. When I was in film school, I made a point to watch as many movies by auteur directors as I could and I would drink wine and tell everyone in the apartment in Santa Cruz to shut the fuck up and they did and the movies were great especially when they were David Lynch or Jean-Luc Godard ones. One time my friend Jordy upset me because I thought he was being pompous, and I left the living room and cooped up in my bedroom and didn’t talk to him for two days and the movie I missed was Mulholland Drive. I had to watch that one on my own. Jordy never apologized but he didn’t need to because I was being young and dumb, as were my tendencies.

One of the times we piled into that living room in Santa Cruz, which sometimes reminded me of an awful sitcom stage, we watched Jim Jarmusch. The easiest and perhaps most popular work of his is Coffee and Cigarettes which is a piece of art that a lot of us kids want to emulate on our own but we don’t have that ’80s/’90s “go fucking do it” attitude. The film has a feeling of a great hip-hop album — each vignette rocks the screen and gives you a different feeling. One bit completely different from the next, but still providing the sensitivity as the last. So, we watched it on that shitty sitcom stage and made bad promises about making our own versions of it.

Later that year, my brother Bradley and I watched Dead Man and Down By Law — the latter of which I still find to be one of my favorite films. But I am not here to tell you of the picture perfect Roberto Benigni and Tom Waits. Nor am I here to tell you of Dead Man and how the ghost of Johnny Depp gave Bradley further inspiration to be a cowboy which he seems to be closer and closer to fully committing to.

I am here because I’m lost. I feel the soulless pain of being down and out and hungover and the truth is that my actual life at the moment doesn’t reflect that feeling. It’s not depression. It’s resignation to the dreariness of the world. It’s refreshing though.

The other day when I fell into my couch, I found out that the Jim Jarmusch film I had yet to see was on YouTube in full. It’s there for splendid glory and I urge you to watch it next time it rains on you or next time your local spot is blown out. Watch John Lurie be unstoppable. Then listen to his music. Then go look at his art and see how unmovable it is and then go back and gather your buddies into the living room that looks like a shitty sitcom stage and watch Coffee and Cigarettes and then drink as much coffee as you can and get into an argument with your friend and then never talk about it again.

I’m just sad because there’s no more Jim Jarmusch films for me to watch and I want the world to be in black and white and it’s how I want my movies to look and I’m worried they never will look that way and anyways here’s the link. Go watch it on YouTube.—Jeff Alper

Dear Youth We back at it, again

After a pretty good sleep on the ferry (thanks NyQuil!), we drove through streets filled with cows and goats and made it to our destination. We were greeted with light winds and fun ramps on the end section. Noa Deane arrived a day late, but did not waste anytime catching up to the other guys….

Dear Youth Part 1: Thanks for the Cheeseburgers (Day 3 of a 10 day trip)

Back in Indo filming. It’s too productive not to come back and fry yourself. The team is Coleborn, Noa Deane, Jack Freestone with myself, Blake, Nate and Hamish on the tools. The basic Indo camp is empty which is unreal. Our own bar, pool table and dartboard. There is another camp with 10 dudes from…

Dear Youth Dane Reynolds gets nostalgic on Marine Layer

Dane Reynolds posted a little trip down memory lane on his website Marine Layer Productions today. He details our first trip to Japan for Dear Suburbia with Yadin Nicol, Kolohe Andino, Conner Coffin, Kai Neville and Courtney (AKA Napkin Apocalypse). And he even mentions “The Claim.” The trip didn’t make the final cut for the film, but has always…

Dear Youth Nate Lawrence on photo breathing exercises at Macaronis

This is Mitch Coleborn photographed in the afternoon at Macaronis. This was as good as a trip gets (you can tell by the full feature and two days worth of galleries we’ve given it). Waves for 12 days straight. One of the best lefts in the world. And Mitch, Noa, Jack and Chippa would let…

Dear Youth Nate Lawrence and the subtleties of a life on the move

Editor’s note: We spend a lot of time in transit. Kuala Lumpur. Taipei. Singapore. Jakarta. Padang. We go through some odd, waveless middle earth’s on your way to ride waves. And it’s not always beers in the Sky Miles lounge (although sometimes you luck out and it is). Mostly it’s a bed between a chicken…

Nate Lawrence: “After a few months in California [Nate is originally from Santa Cruz and still spends about 5 months a year there], it’s so good to be back in Bali. The crowds aren’t too bad and there are waves all over the island. But it’s hot. Really hot. It’s the kind of heat you…

Dear Youth Buy books

I just got a new magazine in the mail yesterday. Forgot I even ordered it actually. That’s the best. Search the Internet for rad shit, put 16 numbers on a dotted line and forget all about it. Two weeks later, a book shows up at your doorstep. The joy that comes with tearing into a…

No offense to Mikala Jones, but this is the worst photo I’ve ever taken in my life. Mikala is a great guy. And I probably should have listened to his the subtle complaints he made and shot this differently. First I had his sunglasses off, but the gold reflector was shining his eyes so bad…

Since tending to the neoprene department at the local surf shop I worked at as a kid, a Volcom party has been the pinnacle of after hours culture and folklore around here. Editor’s Note: There just aren’t enough things in life like Nate Lawrence. Which is unfortunate, because he fucking rules..at everything. Especially photography. Camden Town. Following our recent film trip to the Canary Islands, I stopped off in London for a night. For whatever reason I’ve always been drawn to London. I am a descendent from the U.K. I like the culture. I like drinking pints in foggy London Town. I like cities. I need to be in…
