Dear Youth We talked to our good friend Jake Burghart about filming for the new HBO/VICE show

Jake Burghart Vice HBO Surfing Dear Youth What Youth

That’s him, in a photo taken by a hidden camera, wearing a What Youth shirt, in Pakistan, about to interview some militant freedom fighters. First of all, for those of you who haven’t seen the show, you can check out episode 1 here, and a new episode on HBO every Friday night, and we reccomend that you do, for the betterement of humanity everywhere. It’s incredible. This is journalism. VICE and the work they do across the board has always been a major inspiration to all of us here at What Youth and the work Jake is doing for them right now is unbelievable.

Jake grew up surfing in Florida, did the ESA, lived next door to Gabe Kling and hung with all the Florida crew, surfing and filming. After moving to New York and studying film, he started working at VICE doing a variety of music projects, as well as launching Hi Shredability, the VICE surf show. That was about 10 years ago and now he’s VICE founder and all around badass Shane Smith’s right hand filmer man. When you watch episode 1, watch for Jake getting searched at 14:19 in the Ring of Steel, a series of checkpoints heading into the city of Kabul.

We spoke at length with Jake about his travels over the past year for the show, which include Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan, India, North Korea and many more. “I just got off the phone with my mom,” he told us. “She just saw the show for the first time and was a little worried all of a sudden as I don’t think it registered for her until now as to where I’d actually been this past year.” Aside from filming this incredible show, Jake surfed the wave pool in Dubai, found set ups all over Africa and managed to send us this shot of himself from Pakistan while he was there. Be sure to read his whole story and interview in the upcoming issue of What Youth, out next month. And make sure to watch the show every Friday night on HBO, which is really the only place you should be watching TV anyway.

Dear Youth The fun that leads to sleep paralysis

“Never trust a thought that didn’t come from walking.” That’s a quote by an old madman by the name of Friedrich Nietzsche. He’s an existential pioneer and had one hell of a dark passenger throughout his life. But the man sure did drop some wisdom while he was here. I bring this up as a bit…

Dear Youth A Treatise on Art and Coffee

Coffee is a drug. That’s masked by ubiquity and social acceptance but it’s just hot speed. Black hot wonderful speed. That thought lingered last Saturday morning as a nice young man in a waxed-cotton apron and mustache — and not a November mustache, but a real annual subscription to the thing — fixed my Guatemalan…
