When we flew to Japan Kai was just releasing Lost Atlas, and he wanted to start right away on his next project. This was the first trip we put together for Dear Suburbia,.
The waves we got were good but it seemed like they were always better than good somewhere else, like maybe where we’d just been two hours ago, so we spent a lot of time just driving around in hot vans. Boards on top, people inside, big piles of both. But still so fun.
Yadin remembers it like this: “I think the vibe was so high out of the water that it didn’t even matter if we weren’t surfing. The stoke was so high we were just like, ‘Fuck it, we’re just having fun cruising Japan. There’s pumping waves, but whatever.’”
Most of our sessions are in this first prequel, except one rivermouth wave that was an absolute factory the day we surfed it. That could end up in the film so Kai’s keeping it quiet for now.
We wound up back in Japan a few weeks later for a second tour, and that actually turned out to be the “good” trip. Waves-wise it really threw this one down the stairs. But fuck it, we were just having fun cruising Japan.
