Color Me In: Kalani Chapman & Bret Marumoto Episode 004 Presented by Futures

Big wave surfboards are scary. They symbolize man vs. Nature: which has always been a rather lopsided affair. But man does have it’s victors. And most of them have knowledgable, wise craftsmen in their corner, hand making their weapons. The North Shore shaper is an elite part of our culture. They are built on experience in the world’s greatest wave zone. During a recent trip to Hawaii, we had the opportunity to tour North Shore big wave surfer Kalani Chapman’s ace shaper Brett Marumoto’s shop. Brett is the best kind of shaper. He’s friendly, extremely talented and as knowledgable on boards as a person can be. He is humble and articulate. Experienced and a great surfer himself. Our tour began at Brett’s house, which is conveniently next door to his house.

Bret and Kalani make equipment for a dangerous game. And it’s rather thrilling to watch it go down. Hit play and see how the world’s best shape boards to ride some of the biggest waves in the world.
